The real purpose of escape rooms

Being locked in a room never sounds terribly fun. Let alone paying for the privilege. Despite this, there’s currently a huge spate of experiences designed to test your ability to find keys hidden in some skeleton’s chest cavity: escape rooms. The only times I can remember being locked in a room occurred when I was young, and my dad put a bolt on the top of the door of my room when I flat-out refused to stay in there when I was being punished. It feels odd to think of locking a kid in a room now; it seems like a different time, or a horror movie plot device. We’ve moved on from smacking, and parents don’t even bother to …

From The Terror to Event Horizon, TV horror is a screaming success

There is no shortage of small-screen scares at the moment, with the upcoming remake of sci-fi gorefest Event Horizon set to push the genre to gruesome new heights It is the 21st century’s most influential multinational, an omnipresent Tyrell Corporation pushing AI assistants and drone deliveries. So it is hardly a surprise that Amazon is horny for science fiction. When hard-bitten galactic noir The Expanse was cancelled after three seasons on Netflix, Amazon swooped in to save it. In the UK, it provided a streaming berth for Halle Berry’s alien-baby thriller Extant. And their man in the high castle, Jeff Bezos, seems genuinely jazzed to bring Iain M Banks’s sprawling Culture space opera novels to a device near you. With …

Vivo shows off NEX 3 sketches and ‘waterfall’ curved glass

Vivo has started to ramp up the hype cycle on its next NEX phone. Following a leak last month of glass panels with extreme curvature, NEX product manager Li Xiang posted a picture himself of the glass this week on Weibo and has followed up today with sketches of the new device. The sketches show that Vivo is also using the waterfall metaphor to describe the near-90 degree curvature of the glass’ edges, as with the prototype device that sister company Oppo unveiled last month. The back panel of the new NEX has a circular protrusion to house three cameras, which appears to have been inspired by watch design. Vivo’s first NEX was the first phone with a pop-up selfie …

Seamless ap set up

I will be installing two unifi ap's in a large building. The two should cover the area well, but I am wondering what the best way to manage the two ap's will be. I am looking for the most seamless transitions from on ap to the next, and initially considered going with a mesh network, but was basically told it would be more of a pain than it was worth. How can I set this up so that as a device moves from one location of the building to the next (with a large amount of overlap in the ap's coverage area) it transitions to the strongest signal as quickly and seamlessly as possible. Most mobile devices will be mobile …

Microsoft pulls Windows 10 May update from some Surface Book 2 devices over GPU issues

Microsoft is putting a compatibility hold on its Windows 10 May 2019 update for some of its Surface Book 2 laptops due to an issue where the discrete Nvidia GPU can vanish from the device manager on the OS, which in turn can cause apps or games that rely on that GPU to have issues, via ZDNet. The problem affects a small subset of Surface Book 2 devices — only high-end models with discrete Nvidia GPUs — but it is all the more notable for occurring on Microsoft’s own in-house hardware. Until the company can resolve the issue, though, Surface Book 2 owners with Nvidia hardware won’t be able to download the May 2019 update. It’s not the first issue …
