Facebook Messenger is coming to the desktop

Facebook’s plans to pivot into private messaging now have a desktop software component. The company said today that it would bring Messenger, its popular messaging client, to Mac and Windows later this year. Facebook made the announcement at its F8 developer conference in San Jose, California. There are far more mobile phones in the world than desktop computers, and the pace of development for computers has slowed accordingly. But for office workers who spend most of their days using a Mac or PC, messaging is a core function, and a dedicated messaging app could keep them inside Facebook’s ecosystem for hours a day. “People want to seamlessly message from any device, and sometimes they just want a little more space …

Why it’s so hard to know who owns Huawei

It’s one of the greatest technology “startup” success stories of the personal computer and smartphone eras. Yet, despite selling 59 million smartphones and netting $27 billion in revenue last quarter in its first-ever public earnings report this morning, a strange and tantalizing question shrouds the world’s number two handset manufacturer behind Samsung. Who owns Huawei? To hear the company tell it, it’s 100% employee-owned. In a statement circulated last week, it said that “Huawei is a private company wholly owned by its employees. No government agency or outside organization holds shares in Huawei or has any control over Huawei.” That’s a simple statement, but oh is it so much more complicated. As with all things related to Huawei, which outside …

Moto Z4 leak suggests it could bring back the headphone jack

A leaked image of the unannounced Moto Z4 suggests that the phone could be the first flagship Moto Z device to have a headphone jack. Outside of the 3.5mm connector, the handset appears to support Motorola’s Moto Mod accessories — including the recently released 5G module — and has a teardrop-notched display along with a single camera on its rear. The image was posted to Twitter by Evan Blass. Motorola’s Moto Z lineup has had an on-off relationship with the headphone jack over the years, ever since the Moto Z generated controversy in 2016 by being one of the first phones to be released without one. After Motorola took the plunge, Apple followed suit later in the year with the …

Oculus announces a VR subscription service for enterprises

Oculus is getting serious about monetizing VR for enterprise. The company has previously sold specific business versions of the headsets, but now they’re adding a pricey annual device-management subscription. Oculus Go for business starts at $599 (64 GB) and the enterprise Oculus Quest starts at $999 (128 GB). These fees include the first year of enterprise device management and support, which goes for $180 per year per device. Here’s what that fee gets you: This includes a dedicated software suite offering device setup and management tools, enterprise-grade service and support, and a new user experience customized for business use cases. The new Oculus for Business launches in the fall. Read more: techcrunch.com

Motorola’s vertically folding RAZR shown in leaked renders

Press renders claiming to show the unannounced Motorola RAZR V4 have appeared online in a now-deleted post on Weibo. The images were later reuploaded to SlashLeaks. If real, the renders are our first look at the phone’s design outside of a patent, and they appear to confirm its notched folding screen design. GSMArena notes that the images show a wireless charging stand that’s included with the phone alongside a typical range of accessories, all housed within a neat triangular prism-shaped package. The look of the RAZR shown in the renders lines up with the design shown in a patent spotted back in January, although it’s impossible to see if it confirms a separate rumor about a second display on the …

Is this the vertical-folding Motorola Razr?

This could be the upcoming Motorola Razr revival. The images purporting to be the upcoming smartphone appeared online on Weibo and show a foldable design. Unlike Galaxy Fold, though, Motorola’s implementation has the phone folding vertical — much like the original Razr. This design offers a more compelling use case than other foldables. Instead of traditional smartphone unfolding to a tablet-like display, Motorola’s design has a smaller device unfolding to a smartphone display. The result is a smaller phone turning into a normal phone. Pricing is still unclear but the WSJ previously stated it would carry a $1,500 cost when it’s eventually released. If it’s released. Samsung was the first to market with the Galaxy Fold. Kind of. A few …

These Moms Talking About Swimsuits Will Have You Nodding So Hard Your Head Will Fall Off

I Swimsuit Season So Hard When I’m at the beach, I’m there to lifeguard, build sandcastles, supply treats, re-stand the umbrella every dang time it blows over, spray sunscreen, drink a beer, look for seashells, warm-up wet kiddos, force people to eat sandwiches and drink juice, blow up water-wings, and keep my son from publicly urinating. Basically, I’ve got a really fun job to do and I don’t have time to let a piece of lycra throw me off my game. #imomsohard #baywatch #swimsuit #cutouts #doubledecker #brave #moat #onelife #liveit #momlife #reallife #mombod #beach Posted by imomsohard on Thursday, May 18, 2017 Swimsuit season is upon us, and that means women can collectively scream “WTF!” in fitting rooms around the …

Silly Cat Engages With Her Human in an Impromptu Game of Tug-of-War Over a Yummy Piece of Bread

[embedded content] A very silly little cat named Mew Mew who lives in Blacklick, Ohio, sneaked behind the computer where her human Kelley Fultz was working, caught the scent of a yummy baked good and stuck out a surreptitious white out to drag the half eaten piece of break away by the napkin. Fultz, however, was having none of that and pulled back. This impromptu game of tug-of-war went on for a bit, but Fultz eventually emerged victorious but with a torn napkin. This feline thief is a real cat bagel-er as she tries to steal a bread roll from behind a laptop. Read more: laughingsquid.com
