Page through computer history with this complete scan of NeXT’s Fall 1989 catalog

An amateur computer historian has unearthed a cool piece of technology paraphernalia: NeXT’s Fall 1989 catalog. Kevin Savetz recently scanned the entire 138-page book, and posted the files to Archive.org. NeXT was the company that Steve Jobs founded in 1985 after he was fired by Apple. The company designed computer workstations and lasted through 1997, when Jobs was rehired at Apple. Image: Kevin Savetz Describing himself as an amateur computer historian, Savetz says that he’s scanned “tens of thousands of pages of computer magazines, newsletters, and catalogs” over the years, and also co-hosts ANTIC: The Atari 8-Bit Podcast, conducting hundreds of interviews with the people involved in the company. American Airlines cancels Boeing 737 Max flights through November

Just a couple of days after United Airlines announced that it was canceling more than 5,000 Boeing 737 Max flights through October, American Airlines has announced that it would suspend flights on the beleaguered passenger jet through November 2nd. The airliner had canceled flights through September 3rd, but after the FAA discovered a new problem with the aircraft’s flight computer, it opted to push the aircraft’s return to service until later in the fall. American Airlines says that the removal of the aircraft means that it will have to cancel around 115 flights each day, and has said that it will cost the company upwards of $185 million during its second quarter this year. In its release, the company says …

Cortana is being removed from the GLAS thermostat

Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge The GLAS smart thermostat, which is built by Johnson Controls, is losing its key Cortana integration. Once touted as the only Cortana-powered thermostat, Johnson Controls says it’s now removing Microsoft’s digital assistant from its device. A new software update is rolling out to the thermostat soon, and it removes Cortana completely. “The Microsoft Cortana voice assistant will no longer work on your device,” reads an email to GLAS customers. “Moving forward, you will still have access to other voice assistants to control your thermostat through the Works with functionality of Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant.” Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge Cortana on GLAS. The Lion King remake is the biggest animated earner ever, but Disney claims it isn’t

Photo: The Walt Disney Company Disney’s CGI remake of its 1994 film The Lion King has crossed $1.3 billion at the international box office, officially beating out Frozen’s $1.27 billion to become the top-grossing animated film of all time, per CinemaBlend. That is, it’s sort of the biggest animated film ever since Disney has been loath to call it an animated film at all. While it’s entirely computer-generated footage (save for one shot), Disney continues to refer to it as a live-action film. That’s an odd stance for the studio to take, given how often it likes to crow about its record-breaking blockbusters. But Disney has been oddly insistent on avoiding the animated label for the Lion King remake, despite …

How can I implement device to device push notifications?

I want device A (foreground) to send a push notification to device B (background). I've read through the Firebase Cloud Messaging docs and there is no solution for sending an FCM from one client device to another client device. Only from the Firebase Admin to a device. However it appears it's possible with Google Cloud Functions (why does it only work with Google Cloud Functions?). If i have to use Google Cloud Functions to implement this then I will – but surely there is another way I can send the push notification directly from my client app to another device (background)? PS: device A knows the FCM registration token of device B submitted by /u/GerrardSlippedHahaha [link] [comments] …

Level-5 is bringing the original Yo-Kai Watch to Switch, opening the door for the entire series on one platform

Amid less-than-stellar sales (compared to their past conquests), Level-5 is looking to re-invent the Yo-Kai Watch series. The 3DS, which the franchise has predominantly hitched its wagon to, is on its way out, and the Switch is the new hotness. Naturally Level-5 saw this trend and swapped with their latest entry, Yo-Kai Watch 4, but now they’re doubling, and possibly tripling or quadrupling down. As revealed by way of the Dennoji Reto YouTube channel, Level-5 is bringing the first Yo-Kai Watch game to the Nintendo Switch. This is a pretty big moment for the series, as a new generation of potential fans are now privy to entry, which will apparently arrive in September in Japan. Of course, the Switch Lite is featured heavily …

EA files “Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville” trademark

Electronic Arts has secured a trademark for the name “Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville”. The filing – which popped up on the European Union’s Intellectual Property Office records earlier in the week (thanks, Gematsu and @the_marmolade) – doesn’t offer any further information, sadly, other than its been filed against the NICE classifications 9 and 41. The classifications are predictable enough; the former is categorised as “a computer game software; Downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices; Video game software”, whereas the latter, 41, is described as “entertainment services, namely, providing temporary use of non-downloadable game software; provision of information relating to electronic computer games provided via the Internet”. Sonos FCC filings reveal a mystery device and likely Connect refresh

Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Yesterday Sonos invited media to come learn about new hardware later this month, and the company is already pushing some fresh products through the FCC. Model numbers S17 and S23 are now listed on the FCC’s site. Credit goes to Dave Zatz for spotting them. Now let’s get to figuring out what they might be. S23 has the exact same label style as the Sonos Amp, which leads me to believe it’s a revamped version of the old Sonos Connect. No other current Sonos device, other than the Amp, shares this circular fine print, and it makes sense for the Amp and Connect to share a similar design, with the Connect priced significantly …

Sonos is working on its first-ever Bluetooth speaker

Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge One of two devices recently filed by Sonos with the FCC is a Bluetooth speaker, The Verge can confirm. In the filing for product model S17, Sonos directly states that it’s “a high-performance wireless speaker and part of the Sonos sound system. The device’s primary function will be for streaming with Wi-Fi, but also features Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth Low Energy, used for simplified setup.” (Emphasis added by The Verge.) No other previous Sonos speaker has supported Bluetooth music playback, though the Sonos One includes BLE for the same reason of easier setup. The product label for S17 features a curved blue line running across it, which could be a reference to …

Why is it so difficult to stop your pension money making the climate crisis worse?

You’re lucky if your company pension set-up includes ethical funds that don’t invest in coal extraction or oil drilling In the highly unlikely event that Greta Thunberg grows up and gets a job at the average British company (yes, highly unlikely) then there would be almost nothing she could do to stop part of her pay going every month into a company pension that would, in turn, stuff the money into oil companies such as Shell and BP. It’s 2019, and computer processing has transformed every part of our financial lives – from contactless payments to instant online shopping. So why, when the climate crisis demands urgent action, is it still virtually impossible to control where the biggest sum of …

How to see your mail before it arrives

The United States Postal Service has introduced a new service that you may — or may not — find useful. Informed Delivery lets you preview the front exterior of incoming mail on your computer or phone; you can also track packages and leave delivery instructions for those packages. This isn’t something that the USPS has developed just for its customers. According to an FAQ on the post office’s site, the USPS is already creating digital images of the front of your letter-sized mail; however, it is now making those images available to customers before the mail is actually delivered. Once you’ve signed up for the service, and your address has been verified, you will receive an email from the USPS …
